Reddit makes saving a video weirdly hard. There's no download button on most posts, and Reddit stores the video and the audio as two separate files — so the quick browser tricks and half the “Reddit downloaders” out there hand you a silent clip. You get the picture and none of the sound, which is useless if the whole point was what someone said.

Why Reddit videos lose their sound

It's a technical quirk, not bad luck. Reddit serves video on v.redd.it using DASH, which splits a clip into a separate video track and audio track. Tools that only grab the video URL get exactly that — video, no audio. Proper downloaders fetch both tracks and mux them together into one file. Which Reddit links work

Public posts with a Reddit-hosted (v.redd.it) video work — paste the post URL (reddit.com/r/<subreddit>/comments/…). GIFs and image posts have nothing to transcribe, videos cross-posted from YouTube or elsewhere are better handled by that platform's own tool, and posts in private or quarantined communities, NSFW-gated posts, or deleted and removed posts can't be reached because the media isn't publicly available. As always, respect the original creator: download for personal use, archiving, or properly-credited commentary, not to repost someone else's work as your own.
