Descript Pricing (2026): Every Plan, What's Actually Free, and Is It Worth It?

Short version: Descript has a genuinely free plan, and paid plans run $16 to $50 per month billed annually (or $24 to $65 month-to-month). The price jumps are tied to how many hours of media you edit each month and how many AI credits you get. Below is every plan, what the free tier actually lets you do, and where the costs hide.

Prices were verified on Descript's pricing page on August 20, 2026. Descript changes its plans periodically, so treat this as a snapshot and confirm on their site before you buy.

Two things to notice. Annual billing saves up to 35% versus paying monthly, which is a bigger discount than most editing tools offer. And pricing is per person, so a two-person team on Creator is paying for two seats, not one.

Is Descript free?

Yes, and it's a real free plan rather than a time-limited trial. You get 60 minutes of media per month, 100 AI credits that do not renew, 720p exports with a Descript watermark, 5 GB of storage, and one seat. No credit card is required.

The free plan is enough to learn the editor and cut a short clip or two. It is not enough to produce a weekly show: a single 45-minute episode uses most of the monthly allowance, and the watermark rules it out for anything you publish. Descript doesn't advertise a timed free trial of the paid tiers; the free plan is effectively the trial.

Each Descript plan, explained

Free ($0)

For trying the text-based editor and the studio sound cleanup on a short recording. The 60-minute cap resets monthly; the 100 AI credits do not.

Hobbyist ($24 monthly or $16/month billed annually)

The first paid tier removes the watermark, lifts exports to 1080p, and gives you 10 media hours and 400 AI credits per month. This is the right plan if you publish a short weekly episode or a handful of social clips and you're the only editor.

Creator ($35 monthly or $24/month billed annually)

Descript's most popular plan. 30 media hours, 800 AI credits, 4K export, 1 TB of storage, and it scales to three seats. If you publish more than one long-form episode a week or you edit video for YouTube, this is the tier most people land on.

Business ($65 monthly or $50/month billed annually)

40 media hours, 1,500 AI credits, 2 TB of storage, up to five seats, and priority support with an SLA. Built for small teams and agencies editing for several shows or clients.

Enterprise (custom)

Custom media hours and AI credits, plus procurement, security, and support terms negotiated with sales.

Where Descript's costs actually hide

A few things that catch people after they've signed up:

  • AI credits are a second meter. Transcription and editing draw on media hours; AI features (Underlord, AI voices, and similar) draw on AI credits. Heavy AI users can hit the credit ceiling well before the hours ceiling.
  • Top-ups cost extra. If you run out of media hours or AI credits mid-month on a paid plan, Descript sells additional blocks. Budget for them if your volume is uneven.
  • Seats multiply the bill. Creator and Business include multiple seats, but every seat is a paid person. A three-person team on Creator annual is $72/month, not $24.
  • The annual discount is only a discount if you stay. $16/month on Hobbyist is billed as a year up front. Month-to-month costs 50% more, so decide how long you'll actually use it before picking the cheaper-looking number.

Which Descript plan should you pick?

  • You're testing the waters or editing a few clips a month: Free.
  • You publish one weekly show and you're the only editor: Hobbyist, annual.
  • You publish multiple episodes a week, edit video, or have a co-editor: Creator.
  • You run a small agency or edit for several shows: Business.

Is Descript worth the price?

If your bottleneck is editing, yes. Descript's text-based editing, filler-word removal, and studio sound are genuinely good, and the Creator plan is competitively priced against a full video editor.

If your bottleneck is what happens after the edit, it's worth pausing. Descript gets you a finished file. It does not write the show notes, blog post, newsletter, social clips, and quote graphics that the recording should also become. That work still lands on you, or on a second tool and a second subscription.

That's the use case Castmagic is built for: upload the recording and get the transcript, show notes, blog draft, social posts, and clips in one pass, from $21/month billed annually. If you edit heavily, the two are complementary rather than substitutes. If you mostly need the recording turned into content, one tool can replace the stack. We break that down in Castmagic vs Descript.
