Lesson — How to Become a Master Storyteller (Kallaway) ✓ transcribed
course lesson 12 min
Transcript
  • 00:00 K Today we’re talking about storytelling. If you want your content to perform better, you need to learn to tell better stories — so I’m going to walk through my six favorite techniques. By the way, I’m Kallaway. I’ve pulled over a billion views on short-form video.
  • 00:45 K Tip one is what I call “the dance.” Every great story is a dance between context and conflict. You give a little context, then — uh oh — a conflict. Conflicts create open loops in the brain, and context closes them. That’s how you keep the viewer locked in.
  • 02:30 K Tactically: use the words “but” and “therefore” instead of “and then.” This happens, BUT this happens, THEREFORE this happens. If you’re using “and then,” you’re just piling on detail and the viewer loses interest.
  • 05:10 K Tip two is rhythm. Vary your sentence length — short, medium, long — to create music. When every sentence is the same length, it’s monotonous, and that’s when people churn to the next video.

6 storytelling techniques

The techniques behind a billion+ short-form views, structured as a lesson:

1. The “dance” — alternate context and conflict to keep viewers hooked.

2. But / therefore — replace “and then” with “but” and “therefore” to create open loops.

3. Rhythm — vary sentence length (short / medium / long) so your script sings.

4. Tone — write conversationally, like you’re in the room with the viewer.

5–6. The hook and the payoff (covered in the full lesson).

Apply it to your script

1. Take your last script and highlight every “and then.”

2. Rewrite each as a “but” or a “therefore.”

3. Put each sentence on its own line — is the edge jagged (varied length) or flat?

4. Read it aloud. Does it sound conversational, like you’re in the room?

1. What two words should replace “and then” to create open loops?

2. What does Kallaway call the alternation of context and conflict?

3. Why does varying sentence length matter?

4. Name one creator known for a conversational tone.

The but/therefore rule 02:30

“Use ‘but’ and ‘therefore’ instead of ‘and then’ — that’s how you create open loops that keep viewers watching.”

Make your script sing 05:10

“Vary your sentence length — short, medium, long — to create music. Don’t just write words, write music.”

🧵 6 storytelling techniques behind 1B+ views:

1. The “dance” — alternate context & conflict

2. Swap “and then” → “but” / “therefore”

3. Vary sentence length so your script sings

4. Write in a conversational tone
